There is now a new Clear button to instantly remove all modules from the VRM. Next to the Slate logo there are now Undo and Redo buttons so if make a mistake or someone messes with your mix you can quickly get back to where you were. Often we try things that lead us down the wrong path and these buttons are going to help us back-up from this. There have also been a number of sonic updates to some of the VMR rack modules. Some of the vintage EQ's have had work to make them a little less noisy and "vintage" sounding. The browser has been made faster with a new search function for presets and load times of the VMR are much improved. The final big feature is a new Over Sampling option. This can be used at lower sample rates if you are getting unwanted distortion from some of the saturation plug-ins. However, Over Sampling will increase latency and load to your host computer so use this only when needed. Over Sampling is not a "fix all" or "makes is better" button.

SLATE DIGITAL PLUGINS FREE WITH ILOK SOFTWARE
With software ownership is just a sentiment so why not switch to subscription. All available iLok Cloud Slate Digital licenses will be activated. I'm not saying I will go for subscription, but I do see the benefits. I work with vintage hardware so I'm used to print essential stuff that needs to be recalled exactly, it becomes a professional habit. I have no fear to have a plugin available for a short time: similar thing happens when I rent another studio. They will not outdate as long as I subscribe and I can choose to subscribe for a short period if I need some stuff temporarily, for example when I need to work on a project that uses a lot of brand X plugins I don't have. With subscription I will choose the software I use for as long as I choose to use it. MKIII might come, but again at extra cost. MKII came for some but cost me extra money. Plus: a lot of the plugins I bought where great in their time but are now surpassed. At this moment I still have pci cards: future computers won't have them so eventually I'll need to switch at extra cost. When UAD-3 comes out, same thing will happen. With Uad, my UAD-1 plugin licenses remained valid but I had to switch to UAD-2 at extra cost to be able to use them. All software is licensed and the license lasts as long as the software is relevant. We're talking about software here, so there is no real ownership.

God knows I've spent more than the yearly price on a single UA plug. I do agree that for a typical hobbyist with limited funds, this gets you a TON of cool stuff for a reasonable sum. IDK - I think the value here is on a person by person basis. Also, if you have a need to go back and revisit projects from years past you will need to stay current or your mixes won't work due to the missing plugins. In general, you don't need much support from the company. The products are (for the most part) static - not many changes once a plug is released so you have to hope that new products provide additional value. In the case of plugins, I'm not sold on the idea.

The subscription model lets the software company continue to innovate, assures that you have the latest software, and allows them to provide on-going technical support.

For example, a CRM or Professional Services Application to run your business. I think a rental model for non-static applications has a lot of benefit. Click to expand.I don't think that's entirely true.
